Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the guy who
famously declared in November 2010 that his only priority was making sure President Obama was a one-term president, is
making a lot of promises about how the Senate will be a place of happiness and light and effectiveness if the Republicans take over next year. No more of that dictatorial, mean stuff that Harry Reid is doing.
“We are going to treat senators with respect, we are going to work harder and accomplish more,” said Mr. McConnell, still furious with Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the current majority leader, over what Republicans considered an outrageous power grab in limiting the filibuster last year. “The Senate can be returned to the place of great debates, contentious debates, but where you can still get outcomes on things where you have at least 60 senators.”
Except, when asked about whether he'd reverse that outrageous power grab:
[...] he would not commit to reversing the limit Democrats put on filibustering White House nominees last November, he said the idea would be on the table if Republicans took charge.
“If the American people give us the opportunity to put the Senate under new management, it is an appropriate discussion at that time for the new team that would be taking over the Senate, " Mr. McConnell said in an interview. “It is a conversation for December.”
Yeah, right. Funny how something the Democrats do is outrageous, but is just one of the options available to Republicans. As if McConnell, the minute Republicans got back in power, wouldn't end the filibuster for
everything, nominations, legislation, everything. The mischief and the obstruction they've been able to achieve thus far would pale in comparison to what they'd do if they had all the power for President Obama's last two years in office. Making sure that Democrats couldn't stymie them would be job one.
