I wrote a letter to Sasha and Malia Obama about the Keystone Pipeline. Here is the letter.
Dear Sasha and Malia,
My name is [TLO™] and I am in the fourth grade. This year I started a student run composting program at my school to teach kids how to make compost so they can do it at their home. This is important to me because it will reduce the amount of garbage in the landfills and it turns it into soil so that it can be used for gardens.
I am writing to you because I would like you to talk to your father about the Keystone XL Pipeline. I know you talked to your dad about marriage equality and then he changed his mind. This was important because it shows that you can have an influence on your dad and convince him to make the right choices. Your dad’s choices are going to affect our generation. We should have a say in our future.
The pipeline is going to run through Native Americans’ land, if it leaks it will destroy their land. It can also pollute the farmers’ water source by leaking into the aquifer. An aquifer is a rocky layer underground that can store water like a sponge. Tar Sands oil contains the most carbon out of all the other oils. That is bad because when we burn the oil it releases the carbon into the air as CO2. If CO2 gets above 350 parts per million it will cause global warming. It is already over 350, which is causing droughts, flooding, and extreme weather.
Before and after the tar sand mining
Do you know what is happening in the Boreal forest in Alberta, Canada as we speak? Well if not, this is what is happening: they are mining for tar sands. In order to get the Tar Sands they must cut down the forest to be able to dig deep enough to get the Tar Sands. We need trees to soak up the CO2 and turn it into oxygen. We should not be cutting down trees; instead, we should be planting more trees. When birds migrate and land in the toxic waste ponds, called tailing ponds, they usually die because they drown. The size of the tailing ponds and the areas of destruction altogether is going to be the size of Florida. Because the trees have been destroyed animals have lost their habitat. When the animals lose their habitat they have nowhere else to live.
PBO, ask Sasha and Malia what they think of XL Pipeline
My parents taught me that if your friend is doing something wrong you help them by saying, “Stop!” Well, Canada is our friend, but they are doing something wrong so we should help them by saying the right thing – “Stop!” “Stop mining for oil!” “Stop destroying animal habitat!” “Stop destroying our Earth!”
I have gone to four protests against the Keystone XL Pipeline, and two of them your dad was at. I stood at the police line with my sign hoping your dad would see it. But I don’t think he saw my sign. My sign says, “President Barak Obama, Ask Sasha and Malia what they think of the XL Pipeline!” I was hoping he would see my sign and think of you and our generation’s future.
I really like your dad and I think he is a great President and person. I have two t-shirts of your dad and I wear them to protests. Please talk to your dad about the pipeline because it is our generation that will have to deal with this mess. This is such an important topic, that if you do talk with your dad, since he loves you he will make the right decision. I want to make the world a better place, but I need your help.
Sincerely,
[TLO™]
