It's too bad that Senator Jeff Sessions is unopposed this year. Because now, he can say whatever he wants without any fear of retribution.
"Our law enforcement system is in a state of collapse, and it's a deliberate plan by the president of the United States, and it's wrong. And, people need to be aware of it and need to stand up to it and I believe the American people are beginning to do so."
"So, you come into the country illegally and the attorney general of the United States declares that these individuals have a civil right to amnesty. How can this possibly be: the chief law enforcement officer in America?
"Vice President Biden recently said, quote: 'You know, 11 million people live in the shadows; I believe they're already American citizens.' Eleven million undocumented aliens are already Americans? Goodness. The vice president of the United States would make such a statement. It's stunning beyond belief."
The problem is, President Obama has already deported 2 million such immigrants from this country. So given that it is still at 11 million, our policy is not working. So we have two choices. One is to build more prisons, hire more policemen, hire more judges, create more immigration courts, and find some way to identify people so that we can distinguish between people who are here legally and people who are not.
But that will lead us to a draconian police state that would dwarf the police state foisted on us by George W. Bush after 2001 when we passed the Patriot Act. People would be profiled because they were Latino. Crime would skyrocket because people would be afraid to report it due to fear of deportation and because resources that should be devoted to locking up the real criminals would be diverted to rounding up and deporting illegal immigrants. Children would be treated as second class citizens just because they came to the US at an early age or they were born to immigrants.
The other alternative is comprehensive immigration reform. But that would be political suicide for the GOP, because their base would tar and feather them alive because of their alleged sellout to President Obama. Instead, Senators like Sessions would rather take the easy way out and maintain the status quo. The problem is that business as usual is doing nothing about either getting people out of legal limbo or getting them deported from the country. And it is a lot easier for certain people to blame President Obama than it is to admit that a status quo that they have defended throughout their political careers is not working and that it is in need of reforms.
Only 1% of Sessions' contributions are from small individual contributions for this election cycle. The others are from wealthy donors, lobbyists, corporations, or PAC's. This statistic is telling. And his corporate masters are happy with the status quo. After all, they can hire illegal immigrants for subminimum wage and tell them that if they complain, they will haul them right back to Mexico where they belong. And if we were to go to a massive police state in an effort to rid ourselves of illegal immigrants, his corporate masters would be even happier as they would have even more leverage.
