Those lovely creations, and the dear Aliens, as well, which grace so many Museums, Books, Record Albums, Swatch Watches, Movies, and a host of other things; are crying now. And so am I. Hans Rudolf "Reudi" Giger has left our realm to another, which will surely embrace him.
I discovered this beautiful man's artwork, (Like many of you did), on ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery" album in 1973. I was blown away by the work; and the album, as well. Over the course of the years, I have collected his books, signed/numbered lithographs, and jewelry. There is something in his art that makes many people cringe, perhaps a fear of their own mortality, but it has always made me smile at the true mischievousness and genius of it all. After a really rough day in the trenches, in which I may have witnessed the death of a fellow human, I found it comforting. People either liked his work, or they hated it. My guess is that his harshest critics were just jealous haters. Some thought Dali was the king of surrealism, some thought Giger was. Some refused to call him a true surrealist, but, to me, they both stand on the pinnacle of that mountain.
