This week, the hate group American Family Association sent out an urgent request to its members calling for a boycott of the recently released Harvey Milk commemorative postage stamp.
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay public official to be elected to public office in California. He was assassinated on November 27, 1978. The stamp was unveiled on his birthday – Harvey Milk Day, May 22. The AFA post,
“A Drag Queen Was Behind USPS Harvey Milk Stamp” called the stamp a perversity, and directed the reader to do the following:
1. Refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office. Instead, ask for a stamp of the United States flag.
2. Refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write "Return to Sender” on the envelope and tell your postman you won’t accept it.
I have a better idea, one that will honor Harvey Milk AND support The U.S. Postal Service.
1. Visit your local Post Office and buy a book of Harvey Milk postage stamps.
2. Address an envelope to:
American Family Association
PO Box 3206
Tupelo, MS 38803
3. Write “DONATION ENCLOSED” on the outside of the envelope, affix stamp, and drop in mailbox.
What you enclose in the envelope is up to you, of course. As for me, I will enclose a simple note:
