My current volunteer job made me think of Judge Roy Bean.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
We've split up the publishing duties, and this is our regular schedule:
Monday: BadKitties
Tuesday:
Wednesday: Caedy
Thursday: art ah zen
Friday: FloridaSNMOM
Saturday:broths
Sunday: loggersbrat
That's the regular schedule,
but we welcome everyone in IAN
to do diaries for the group!
Every member is an editor,
so anyone can take a turn,
when they have
something to say,
photos and music to share,
a cause to promote,
or news!
If you would like to fill in,
either
a. post your request in thread,
or,
b. send FloridaSNMom a Kosmail,
with the date you want to write for.
If you need someone to fill in,
ditto.
FloridaSNMom is here on and off through the day,
usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern
to around 11 pm eastern.
If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network,
please leave a comment asking to join,
or send us a message asking to join.
We'd love to have you.
The bigger our network,
the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.
When I was a kid, Knott's Berry Farm was a berry farm in Buena Park with a restaurant that made fried chicken and berry pies. They opened a small western themed amusement park that all of us kids went to. There was a Ghost Town, saloon, stage coach, a jail and a court house. The court house was presided over by Justice of the Peace, Judge Roy Bean. You could go there, and among other things, get plumb fake married. You got a fake marriage license, a garter to throw or wear, and horse shoe nails bent to be rings. I can't tell you the number of times I was married there, nor to whom. Even my Mr. and I got married there in our early courtship.
Per Wikipedia, in 1882, Roy Bean became the Justice of the Peace in Pecos County. His legal career was lengthy, colorful, and not very legal. But I was interested in the weddings he performed. There was no information on any. Wiki did say that he charged $5 for a wedding, $10 for a divorce that he was not entitled to provide, and ended all weddings with "and may God have mercy on your souls." He spent most of his money in his later years helping the local poor and providing free wood for the schoolhouse. There was a strange and wonderful film made 1972 called "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean". It is not very factual but it is very entertaining and it stars Paul Newman, always a plus in my book.
I will probably not repeat his ending at the weddings I perform (damn!) and I don't even get $5 each but I am sure I will enjoy it immensely. At orientation, I was advised that they schedule a wedding every 15 minutes, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I'll let you know.
Meanwhile, check in, let us know what you are up to.
