11/9/2015 Note: Much of what’s here is no longer relevant to DK5 — the Image Library has changed in ways I never could have expected. However, much of the code shown here is still relevant, and I will try to update it further in the next couple of days. Rather than working directly from the Image Library to construct these, View Image Properties from the larger image on the right of the Image Library and copy the image URL link to work on in a text editor offsite to build your siggraphic.
And, PM me if you need help.
Oh, boy — resaving this diary messed up more than I thought it would — check out the old comments for a few tips, but this will definitely have to be rewritten.
A tip of the hat to WeeMama for heading me in this direction.
mouseover
DK5 will be a cleaner, brighter interface, and I like it lots. But I also like siglines, even though I can see the need to get rid of text that in some cases can take up half the text space in any given comment thread. So I started playing with sigline graphics.
mouseover and link
Constraints: Since, unlike text, graphics do not wrap, any graphic that's used for a sigline has to be a maximum of 200 pixels wide, unless you never, ever, get into a discussion that pushes the thread to the right hand side of the page. Minimum height: around 5 pixels, because these graphics are going to be used both for mouseovers and links, and under 5 pixels can make it harder than necessary to aim your cursor. Maximum height - around 25 pixels. This is going to be a sigLINE, not a sigblob.
More free graphics, and instructions on how to build the sigs, below the whatever.
If you're building your own, upload your graphic to the image library, and then open a draft diary to hold the image. Embed the image into the draft diary, and you will see

Take out the div class and span class sections before and after the img section, and replace them with center, /center. Add a title="" at the end of the attribute string. The final result should look like this:
\
\
\\
Then add whatever text you wish between the "" of the title attribute. To turn the sigline into a link, highlight the img src= .... area of the code and use the Diary Link button to make the image into a link. Save, and remember to keep a tab open to access the code, or copy the code to an outside text program for fast copying. Unfortunately, remembering to use the new sigline will take some time to get used to, which is why I'm starting now.
