At the state Democratic Convention in 2013, we delegates were introduced to several candidates for governor, including Dr. Donald Berwick, former head of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the Obama administration. At the time, I was supporting Dan Wolf, but Berwick's introductory video caught my eye, especially when he pointed out that Glen Beck had once called Berwick the "2nd most dangerous man in America"! I figured anyone with that on his resume has to be a great candidate...
Dan Wolf has since dropped out of the race - the state ethics board made a mess of things, stating that his ownership stake in Cape Air would be a conflict of interest should he be elected, since Cape Air uses Logan Airport, and the governor's office sets policy for MassPort, the entity that controls Logan. When that happened, it was time to give Dr. Berwick a second look. Here's his convention speech from this year, at the convention where I happily voted to put him on the primary ballot:
Of the three candidates in the Democratic primary, Don is the bold progressive in the race. While the other two candidates (Attorney General Martha Coakley and Treasurer Steve Grossman) speak in the usual platitudes of "holding a conversation" and "looking into possibilities", Don promises bold action. Please join me over the fold for the interview I had the pleasure of conducting earlier this week.
It's an hour long, but well worth the time it takes to watch:
