Legendary Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter has died in Zurich while on tour in Europe. He was 70.
Winter, who, together with his younger brother Edgar, suffered from albinism, was known almost as much for his long straight white hair as for his amazingly fast blues guitar licks. In addition, his problems with heroin addiction were also well documented.
But, for me (and for most fans), John Dawson Winter III was always about the guitar licks. They came fast and furious, whether in his cover of Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited:
