People who attended Netroots Nation sat through a lot of panels regarding the role of women candidates in upcoming races. Candidates and advocates talked about campaigns and candidates around the country. If you attended the "Women on the Run" panel, you may have heard something that surprised you - but it didn't surprise me.
Margie Wakefield is one of the best run campaigns in America.
Let me repeat that: People outside of our state looked into Kansas, looked at the races we run and pointed to Margie Wakefield and had no problem saying not only was this a good campaign, it was a GREAT campaign for a House District and one that was on their watch list.
This is no surprise, as Margie Wakefield is a Kansan candidate who has been officially endorsed by Emily's List, who opposes a sitting Republican in Lynn Jenkins that opposes virtually all progressive issues, while refusing to vote on others.
As we wind down the summer session and head into the Primaries here in Kansas, I wanted to give some attention to the race in Kansas that has outsiders talking.
If you have followed the events in Kansas it becomes easy to salivate over the race for our governor. National attention has focused on Paul Davis, a candidate who has consistently pushed Sam Brownback in the polls and showed his dedication to the effort month after month.
I've spoken about numerous other candidates in state and local races - candidates I like, candidates I think deserve attention. There has been one race though I haven't mentioned often here. I haven't mentioned it because I watched from afar and said - this is almost too good to be true.
Margie Wakefield, however, is not "Too Good to be True" for a candidate, she is, in fact, a candidate that is far better than I think anyone expected Kansas to have.
As a result, it is no surprise that Emily's List came out to endorse Margie Wakefield and to show Kansans we have a sign of support.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, put Margie Wakefield, candidate for Congress in Kansas’ Second Congressional District, “On the List.” Wakefeld will challenge Tea Party Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins.
The EMILY’s List community is now three million members strong. “On the List” is a way to make sure that EMILY’s List members can engage with and support promising candidates all across the country even earlier in the election cycle. By putting these women “On the List,” EMILY’s List is ensuring that they have access to this powerful network of supporters.
“Margie Wakefield has decades of experience tirelessly serving her community and helping families resolve conflicts, and she’s prepared to tackle the tough challenges facing Kansas women and families from the day she arrives in Congress,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “The EMILY’s List community of three million members is proud to lend our support to such a promising candidate in the early stages of her campaign.”
What helps set Margie apart is her district - a district that has undergone a recent remapping after Republican infighting in Kansas. CD-2 in Kansas is now more 'purple' than ever, as it envelopes the most liberal areas of our state in Douglas county, and the growing progressive communities down the 169 and 69 corridor + Topeka. What does Margie have going for her? A democratic governor campaign that is centered in her district. A district that favors change. And a district ready for a new kind of message.
Rather than me repeat it, I will give Margie a chance to explain her campaign herself:
So, yes, I'm telling you that now is the time to join not an effort to build a party - but an effort to win. As we learned at Netroots, one of the "best run campaigns in the country".
Now is the time if you are a Kansan or an out of stater who wants change, to chip in a little and show Margie the kind of support that Emily's list and others have.
