“The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be... The nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists.”

From Anne Petermann, The Need for Clear Demands at the Peoples’ Climate March
In New York City on September 21st, a major climate march is planned. It will take place two days before UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s UN Climate Summit–a one-day closed door session where the world’s “leaders” will discuss “ambitions” for the upcoming climate conference (COP20) in Lima Peru.
350.org and Avaaz originally called for the march, but environmental and climate justice organizations and alliances based in the New York/New Jersey region and across the US demanded (and won) a seat at the organizing table to attempt to ensure that the voices of front line and impacted communities are heard.
So, what are the demands of the march? There are none. That’s right. The march will simply bring together an estimated 200,000 people to march through the streets of New York and then…
There will be no rally, no speakers, and no strong political demands. Just people showing up with the overarching message that the world’s leaders should take action on climate change. Why no solid demands? I’ve been informed by organizers that the reason this march is being held with no actual demands is because we need a big tent.
The article continues to explore opposing forces under the big tent, i.e., The Climate Group, also planning activities around the Ban Ki-moon summit, whose solutions to climate change have been debunked by the global climate change movement.
From boatsie, 350.org launches a global call to action around September’s UN Climate Summit
The NY march aims to bring hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of New York City to call on world leaders to commit to bold climate action as they arrive to attend a historic Climate Summit hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The summit is one of the last chances for world leaders to come together and spark international progress before it becomes too late to avoid catastrophic climate impacts. World leaders will be greeted with the largest mobilization on climate change in history in NY and globally.
“People from across the planet will be making sure that leaders gathered in New York know the demand for action comes from every corner,” said Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, a global climate campaign on climate change. “This is the first truly global problem, and it has spawned the first truly global movement!”
The main demand from this global mobilisation is for Action, Not Words. Actions necessary to create a world with an economy that works for people and the planet – now. In short, a world safe from the ravages of climate change.
The web platform launched today will serve as a focal point for mobilisations being planned globally and as an open platform where anyone, anywhere will be able to register a local event and will also find online support tools in multiple languages.
From boatsie, Join Naomi Klein Chat Today on Climate March
The historic summit is being convened by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to engage all UN Member States, leaders in the business, civil society, and finance as well as leaders from local public and private sectors "to catalyze ambitious action" prior to the 2015 UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP) 21 climate talks in Paris.
Participants in COP21 are tasked with reaching a cohesive and ambitious agreement which equitably limits the rise in global temperature to less than 2-degree Celsius.
Over 750 environmental groups, businesses, unions, faith groups, schools, social justice groups, and other organizations, are collaborating on the march and other events during the week of the Summit.
The march is "Committed to principles of environmental justice and equality — representing the communities that are being hit the hardest by climate change."

Dear Friends,
This September, world leaders are coming to New York City for a landmark Climate Summit at the United Nations. But we shouldn’t trust those leaders to take action on their own -- we need to prove to them that the world’s people demand action right now.
With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history by taking to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach. A world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.
Join us September 21st in NYC for the People's Climate March – the largest march demanding action on climate change in history.
The success of the summit depends a lot more on us than it does on our politicians. If we seize this moment and show real political power, it will open up the space for meaningful action.
If we fail to turn out, if world leaders walk away from that summit without seeing a strong, public demand for action, there’s no chance our so-called “leaders” are going to make real commitments on their own.
Join us in taking a historic stand at the People's Climate March this September.
Scientists have made it clear that we’re running out of time to avoid catastrophic climate change. Every new report reveals a shorter timeframe for action, and every new disaster underlines their words in grim ink.
By joining the march on September 21st, you will no longer just be a witness to climatic history – you will be shaping it.
