With just 22 days before the Ban Ki-moon
UN Climate Summit (Twitter
@BKM_summit), The Sierra Club today released the following Petition to engage citizens in the campaign to urge world leaders show up in New York for the September 23rd summit.
As one of the major organizers of The People's Climate March and events up to and beyond the Summit, The Sierra Club has pledged to deliver the signatures to all world leaders who have not committed to attend.
Below is the text from Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune:
China, United States, India, Russia, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, Germany, South Korea, and Canada: the world's largest emitters of carbon pollution.1
Climate change is a global problem that can't be solved by one nation working alone. World leaders must work together knowing that everyone is doing their part. And yet, only a few leaders from the top-emitting countries have committed to attend the upcoming UN Climate Summit and seek global solutions.
You can provide the catalyst for action by pushing world leaders to get off the fence and commit to attending the summit.
Time is running out -- Sign the petition now, and tell world leaders that they must attend the summit in New York on September 23rd!
President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping have already agreed to participate -- but many key leaders have refused to commit to attend the summit. The United States and China will be crucial to any international climate agreement, but no two nations can solve the climate crisis by themselves. Other world leaders are waiting to see if they can get away with skipping the summit and waiting to see what the U.S. and China will do. They need to see that the time for waiting is long past, and that there's a global movement demanding climate action now. Show them that the world is watching, and we're tired of waiting!
Click here to sign the petition calling on heads of state to commit to attend the UN Climate Summit and set concrete, achievable goals to stop climate disruption.
Thank you for all you do,
P.S. There are only a few days left to push these world leaders to commit. With the deadline coming up, we can't afford to leave anyone on the sidelines. Make sure you share this action on Facebook and Twitter so your friends will know how to join the fight.
