NPR has released extensive lists of the military hardware that has been funneled from the Pentagon to police departments across the country through the Law Enforcement Support Office 1033 program.
In addition to 600 mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles (MRAPs) now ready to face down citizens exercising their Constitutional rights, those employed to protect and serve have lots of other nifty (read: terrifying) gadgets at their disposal:
• 79,288 assault rifles
• 205 grenade launchers
• 11,959 bayonets
• 3,972 combat knives
• $124 million worth of night-vision equipment, including night-vision sniper scopes
• 479 bomb detonator robots
• 50 airplanes, including 27 cargo transport airplanes
• 422 helicopters
• More than $3.6 million worth of camouflage gear and other "deception equipment"
NPR has kindly provided the complete data set it worked with in compiling its report and organized it to be explored as a whole or on a state-by-state basis.
I don’t know about you but I’m particularly curious to learn which American cities consider grenade launchers and bayonets appropriate tools for protecting and serving.
