On Wednesday, October 1, Jimmy Carter, the 39th President, will turn 90. Send him a card at Jimmy Carter, Plains, GA. 31780.
Last weekend I traveled tp Plains where a group of 150 or so political button collectors had a birthday dinner with Carter. He looks great! Same for Rosalynn Carter, who continues to be an advocate for progressive mental health treatment policy. Jimmy Carter still walks briskly, travels extensively and volunteers one week per year with Habitat for Humanity.
Plains is a pleasant little town where several sites related to Carter's life, including his boyhood farm and 1976 campaign headquarters, are managed by the National Park Service. As usual, Carter also taught Sunday School at Mariantha Baptist Church and presided over the annual Peanut Festival (always the last weekend of September). They love tourists in Plains.
I'll always be proud that I worked in both of Carter's presidential campaigns. 1976 was a lot more fun!
Better than a card, shoot a donation To Jason Carter (just Google him), the Democratic nominee for Governor. Carter, a State Senator, is running well in polls and has a real shot at unseating Republican Nathan Deal. If elected, Carter would be a real leader of progressives throughout the south.
