I hate to post and run, but this confirms our expectations. From the Associated press via ESPN.com:
A gay Russian protester was detained on Saturday for unfurling a rainbow flag during the Olympic torch relay as it passed through his hometown of Voronezh, 560 miles north of Sochi, where the Games will begin Feb. 7.
Photographic evidence (not available as I write this) has Pavel Ledbedev unfurling a rainbow flag and being wrestled to the ground by Olympic security forces. AP reached Ledbedev by phone while he was in the police statement:
"Hosting the Games here contradicts the basic principles of the Olympics, which is to cultivate tolerance," Lebedev said, citing growing homophobia in Russia as the main reason for his protest.
Arrested by Olympic security forces and turned over to the Russian police. There's something very very wrong with that. This is not complicity, this is collaboration as in, say, the Vichy government during World War II. This is the IOC working as an arm of the Russian state.
This tells me that there is now absolutely no point in having the Olympic Games whatsoever anywhere as long as the IOC stands for nothing and doesn't even observe its own rules. But we should salute the courage of Pavel Ledbedev for risking arrest for a cause in which he believes, especially since we believe in it too.
