January is drawing to a close, and in most of the country it's been a cold, snowy, dangerous, and nasty month so far. Also, the usual January rush at the gym, according to one of my "gym rat" buddies on-line, is receding.
Now, I've never joined a formal exercise group at all, from Jazzercise at the Y to a gym or even something like square dance. I have investigated the Rec Center at my local university but never felt the need to join. Do they help or hurt, in your experience?
Daily Kos Weight Loss is a community at Daily Kos dedicated to weight loss, maintenance, and support. As with all communities, trolls are calorie-free and will be munched should they engage with us. Please feel free to jump, jog, skip, dive, or walk in.
For myself, I wonder what causes the quick join-and-quit I've heard about over the years. Are people substituting joining a group for actual plans to get in shape? Do they find that it's just too much in their busy lives, or could they continue but choose not to?
I've found that working out at or associated with my work actually does better for me. At my previous job, I got roughly 40 minutes/day of walking during my "lunch break." Currently, as my job is very active and my employers encourage fitness, I can get 200+ when it's really slow on my overnight shifts.
I'm sure there are people for whom formal exercise at a gym works. I am glad for them. I just wish everyone could figure out what works so that we all could get into the best possible shape. What works for you? How are you getting healthier this year?
139 on the scale this morning.
