Phil was the younger one, the pretty one, the harmonizer. His voice floated on top of his brother's, and wandered around, lending a variety to the melodies that made them just that much better.
Their dad Ike was a noted guitarist, with a style that was reminiscent of Merle Travis, which makes sense, as, (maybe apocryphally,) they both were tutored by the same man, an itinerant musician named Arnold Schultz, who also influenced a young Bill Monroe.
the man who "discovered", or I guess enabled them was another great picker, the legendary Chet Atkins, who humbly admitted that he had a pretty good ear for potential.
The hits they produced were many, and influenced generations, including the Beatles. maybe the best thing to do is just listen to a couple, and say, thanks, Phil.
