I am watching political activity in WA-5 very much from the sidelines these days. But reading commentary in the Spokesman Review this morning, I came across a comment or two with a link to Pakootas for Congress. I've seen the earnest candidates, the good candidates that knew from the start they would not have a chance and the place holders. This looks very different. I believe there is a real chance here. And with someone from McMorris Rodgers own back yard. Even better.
More below the fold
About Joseph Pakootas
(puh-KOE-tuss)
As an elected official for over 16 years, Joseph Pakootas has worked with federal, state, and local governments for positive legislative and policy changes.
As CEO of the Colville Confederated Tribes, Pakootas is credited for a $10 million economic turnaround. By refocusing on sustainable business enterprises, Pakootas rescued the Colville Tribal Federal Corporation (CTFC) and has delivered a secure multi-million dollar revenue stream, which helps improve the lives of nearly 10,000 members of 12 tribal bands across three states.
In this interview he shares his own history and his experience as the CEO of the Colville Confederated Tribes. At the end of this excellent interview is this:
S-R: What’s ahead for you?
Pakootas: I haven’t officially announced it yet, but the word is out that I’m seeking the Democratic nomination in the 5th Congressional District.
S-R: Can you do that in addition to running the tribal corporation?
Pakootas: I can until March or April, because right now I’m still in fundraising mode. But once the campaign starts, I’m hoping to take a leave of absence.
S-R: What are your chances against the incumbent, Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers?
Pakootas: It’s going to be a heavy lift, but Republicans have been making some mistakes and rural America has really noticed it.

He said a run for Congress has been in the back of his mind for some time. Friends have encouraged him to run, and the tipping point might have been when Democratic groups in some of the southern counties participating in a "search for a candidate," met him and encouraged him to put his hat in the ring.
"I think it will take from $1 million to $1.5 million to launch a successful race," Pakootas stated. He said Tuesday that he has started some fund raising and is meeting people
He's so right about the cost. The last thing Boehner wants is to lose this seat. They will fight hard and dirty. This is a candidate that has a "bio" -something that CMR uses as her mainstay. And he has real world experience-hands-on. And from Colville-where she started.
You've all seen what McMorris Rodgers is. Now is the time to make the change. We all need it!
