Yes a President of Catalonia has been killed by Spain. No it is not Artur Mas, it is not today. But there is a day where Spain killed the President of Catalonia.
This day was October 15, 1940. The president killed was Lluis Companys. He was tortured and executed like a criminal for defending Catalonia from the Spanish fascism.
There you can see another profile of the executed President of Catalonia.
Spain has a history of high profile violence against Catalonia. It is not the first time that this people is fighting for the independence with high human costs for them.
Artur Mas, the current President of Catalonia knows the history of his country, and know how Lluis Companys was executed by fighting against the centralist wishes of the government of Madrid. A fascist government at the time, but also very related with the current government of Rajoy.
Mariano Rajoy is the man who is helping all the crimes of the Francoism getting impune. Only a few days ago, Jose Utrera Molina, a minister Secretario General del Movimiento (leader of the Falange the alone party during the Francoism and still legal in Spain), and father in law of Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon ministre of justice (attorney general) of Spain in the government of Rajoy until a few weeks, has been indicted in Argentina (link in Spanish) by the execution in 1974 of a catalan anarchist named Salvador Puig Antich and a german citizen named Michael WelzelWelzel, by garrote (please, read carefully about the procedure of this execution method. A prosecution of this crimes is not possible in Spain, and this is why the Spanish victims are going to other countries finding some justice. The Argentine justice ordered the arrest of José Utrera Molina, but of course he remains free at home despite no-one sign of change in his fascist ideology and despite to continue to be one of the promoters of the current apology of the Francoism (in this case of the Blue Division) by being a high profile member of the Fundación Francisco Franco leaded by the alone daughter of the dictator.

Of course Artur Mas knows who is in front of him. Artur Mas knows how agressive can be the Spanish right when challenged, but he is opening the dors to the people of Catalonia for making real their wish.
Today, November 9, has been the day of a referendum for the self-determination of Catalonia.
Artur Mas and the people that wanted to vote succeed today. Clearly. Despite the threats of a central government with a history plagued of violence against Catalonia this time they have not been able to stop the real wish of the people that has gone free to vote. Just 25 years after the fall of the Wall of Berlin, another wall falled today, the wall of the Spanish imposition over Catalonia.
Today the people voted, and voted free, except for some incident caused by some Spanish fascist. Only that is victory for Catalonia. In a non-official referendum, because the official call was made illegal by the Spanish government, the people made real their wish of voting. About a half of the census voted today, in a non-official election threated from Madrid.
If you are interested in the results, I will be updating this diary to include the results of this referendum with two questions for the people. The people voted and the vote count begins. The two questions have been (my own traslation):
Do you want Catalonia to be a state?
Do you want Catalonia to be an independent state?
At this point
(updated) the results are:
With 2305390 votes counted:
2116401 91.80% Yes to the 1st question.
1861753 80.76% Yes to the 2nd question (yes to both questions).
104772 4.54% No (to both questions)
Update: Spanish government reaction:
1.- To close the eyes to the reality recognizing not the data of participation (that kill them).
2.- To continue the threat of prosecution to the President of Catalonia.
