The teaser on Huffpo says "University Of Virginia Pulls The Plug On Fraternities Amid Rape Controversy". That's far from what happened. The actual story says:
The University of Virginia has suspended activities at all campus fraternal organizations amid an investigation into a published report in which a student described being sexually assaulted by seven men in 2012. ... the suspension of all fraternal groups is effective until Jan. 9. (emphasis added to show up the JACKBOOTED UVA ADMINISTRATION.)
Let's see. With vacations coming up, frat activities will be suspended. Oh, that HURTS! And meanwhile, they're gonna do what academic do best -- have a MEETING!
According to the original Rolling Stone article, this was what women could expect from the Cavaliers of UVA:
... a UVA first-year student, whom we'll call Stacy, filed a report stating that while vomiting up too much whiskey into a male friend's toilet one night, he groped her, plunged his hands down her sweatpants and then, after carrying her semi-conscious to his bed, digitally penetrated her. When the Charlottesville DA's office declined to file charges, she says, Stacy asked for a hearing with the Sexual Misconduct Board, and was surprised when UVA authority figures tried to talk her out of it.
This has been going on a long time, not just at UVA but at many other campuses. I had to warn my daughter, who is starting her first year at the UofO, to stay completely away from any fraternity. I'm sure other parents have had the same conversation.
I don't understand why the educational "system" tolerates the presence of these drunken punks. Or maybe I do. Let's see: they're mostly white (100% white at my college) ... could that have something to do with it?
There isn't a college or university in this country that doesn't claim to be "molding future leaders" or some such drivel. But let's take them at their word. When near-children of ages 19 or 20 are empowered to victimize others, particularly women, not only without consequence, but with social approval, what kind of leaders are we going to get?
But perhaps I paint with too broad a brush. Let's hear from a a typical defender of the fraternity system:
... you can't hold a. whole fraternity responsible for the behaviour of a few sick, perverted individuals. If you do ... shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system?
And if the whole fraternity system is guilty ... then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general?
I put it to you, Greg. Isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?
Well ... you can do what you want to us... but we won't sit here... and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!
