The young won't vote, so do a good deed and befriend a voter.
From a website called AGEUK:
We all know what it's like to feel lonely, but did you know that around 1 million older people regularly go an entire month without speaking to anyone?
Loneliness is a massive issue for people in later life in the UK. Half of all people aged 75 and over live alone, and 1 in 10 people aged 65 or over say they are always or often feel lonely – that’s just over a million people.
Shockingly, half of all older people consider the television their main form of company.
I am certain that US statistics are just as horrifying, if not more so. We live in an age where even the nuclear family has broken down. And if TV is your best friend, you are very vulnerable to political manipulation in the form of political ads. But not just that, you are the prime target of manipulation by the mainstream media. Sitting there absorbing all the crap about Ebola and ISIS. And that's just the regular media...god help you if Fox becomes your friend.
Ever since I was very young I have been hearing about the upcoming youthful Democratic voters who are going to realign the world. It doesn't happen. They get more conservative as they age, start making money and raising a family. Actually seniors are one of the age groups most open to change, according to sociologists. Most seniors are far more liberal (in terms of being tolerant) than they were when they were young. That is not to say that they are more liberal than the youth, but much more liberal than they were in their own youth.
Seniors are going to be voting. Seniors are going to be controlling the outcome of midterm elections.
We should start a program to befriend seniors. A call bank of volunteers where we could be assigned a senior and speak with them once a week by phone. If we can phone bank like mad for elections, and we can give our time happily to worthy causes, this is something we could do that would not only alleviate loneliness, but aid our electoral prospects. After all, friends don't let friends watch Fox.
