Remember how Republicans have spent the past two years intermittently talking about their declining demographic problem and broadening their appeal? Well, that's out the window. America's Voice is now calling them "The Party of Mass Deportation" due to the vote on GOP Rep. Ted Yoho's immigration bill—an attempt to thwart Obama's executive actions. Here's
AV's Frank Sharry:
With this vote on this bill today, the Republican Party cements its reputation as the party of mass deportation. Instead of allowing a vote on a comprehensive approach to immigration reform that would modernize our dysfunctional immigration system, enhance orderliness and put 11 million immigrants on a path to permanent residence, House Republicans are making it clear their policy alternative is to subject as many undocumented immigrants as possible to deportation.
As Sharry points out, the House could instead vote on the bipartisan immigration bill that has been languishing ever since the Senate passed it last summer. But nah … why get something useful done? Better to take a symbolic vote on legislation that's going nowhere while totally alienating a demographic that will make up about 11 to 12 percent of voters in 2016. Congrats!
