So far Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) seems to have spent considerably more time justifying the reason for his special committee's existence than actually doing anything. Then again, that was perhaps
always the point.
The chairman of the special House committee created to investigate the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya, pushed back Wednesday against critics who have called for him to abandon his efforts, saying “we should not move on” until more questions about the episode are answered. [...]
“I remain keenly aware that there are those on both sides of the aisle who have concluded that all questions have been answered, there is nothing left to do, no more witnesses to talk to, no more documents to review,” Mr. Gowdy said. “It is worth noting that some of those very same folks did not think that Benghazi should have been looked at in the first place.”
It is also worth noting that nobody ever claimed the attack at Benghazi should not have been "looked at," so Rep. Gowdy seems to have fully embraced his role as proud defender against the armies of strawmen that threaten to surround him. As Rep. Gowdy confesses, the Benghazi attack has been "looked at" repeatedly. The Republican complaint has been that none of those investigations have uncovered what a certain segment of Republicans truly believe—that something-something Hillary Clinton—and so every one of the committees and investigations that fails to find what those Republicans demand they find is dismissed as in on the conspiracy to bury the something-something. It descended into a farce a good long time ago, but Trey Gowdy still needs his own moment to shine so by gum, we'll be doing all of this again.
But don't worry, it's for America.
“We may risk answering a question twice,” he said. “That seems like a really small investment compared with what others have given and are currently giving to our country.”
That's Rep. Trey Gowdy, Benghazi "investigator" and true American hero. And so on.
