** EDITOR’S NOTE: Date for DEQ meeting remains March 5. Time change detailed below. **
DEQ will host its previously announced March 5 public outreach meeting on petroleum coke from 4-7 p.m. to better accommodate the schedules of attendees. The date and location remain the same.
Residents and local leaders expressed concern that the original meeting time would not allow interested parties to participate in the informational meeting. DEQ responded with a new time.
Pet coke is a solid byproduct generated by petroleum refineries. High in carbon, it is commonly burned as fuel in cement kilns and power plants.
The meeting will be held at the Grand Harbor Banquet Event Center, 1 Saint John St. in Wyandotte, from 4-7 p.m. It is designed to share information and answer questions. DEQ air and water quality specialists will be on hand to listen to concerns, discuss DEQ’s regulatory role, answer questions and share information gathered from a DEQ lab analysis of pet coke completed last year.
A formal public hearing on Detroit Bulk Storage’s River Rouge permit application will be held later this year.
Storage and handling of petroleum coke in bulk form can be a source of emissions of particulate matter, often referred to as “fugitive dust.” A facility handling bulk solids will typically implement and maintain a “fugitive dust control plan” to reduce fugitive dust emissions.
The Michigan DEQ requires a facility handling bulk petroleum coke to obtain a Permit to Install that would require an operator to implement and maintain acceptable fugitive dust control strategies.
Anyone who needs accommodations for effective participation at this meeting should contact Amie Hartman at 517-284-6793 at least a week in advance to request mobility, visual, hearing or other assistance.

1:00 PM PT: The link addressing current matters involving storage of petroleum coke at a site planned in River Rouge, MI to the Michigan DEQ is now fixed in the main body of the diary.
1:04 PM PT: Here is the site of the proposed petroleum coke build storage and shipping site:

I still have to find information on the physical method of how they plan on getting the petroleum coke from the Marathon Refinery in Detroit to this site.
