The 33rd congressional district race in California is heating up like never before. Marianne Williamson threw her hat in the ring before Henry Waxman announced his resignation. Since Waxman announced Wendy Greuel (who ran against LA Mayor Gil Garcetti) was the first Democrat to announce. Ted Lieu followed and he seems to be the "official" candidate supported by the California Democratic party. Last week Matt Miller announced. In addition Derrick Ferree and Barbara Mulvaney have also announced as Democrats. And a Republican Elan Carr and independent Brent Roske came in. Even Sandra Fluke came close to announcing.
The big day is the open primary on June 3. The top two vote-getters will be featured in November regardless of their party.
I decided to support Marianne Williamson because;
a) I heard her speak about politics 2 years ago and realized I was on the same page as her.
b) I believe she has the personality, character, passion and intelligence to help change the way things are in DC
I also believe that if people meet her and hear her speak they will also support her. So doing what I could I convinced her to join us at the next Drinking Liberally Westside in its new venue at
Brennan's Pub in Marina del Rey tomorrow Wednesday at 7PM.
Look, I understand, Marianne is different, until about 6 months ago her big cause was to convince more women to run for office in a movement called Sister Giant and I
diaried about it. Since then I have gotten to know her better and listened to her address crowds. She is definitely a leader who can motivate people and she is one smart woman as those of you who read some her many books know. I am personally not "spiritual" and certainly not religious, a borderline atheist if you ask me. What I like is the vision she has of the changes that we need to make to our dysfunctional political system by
getting money out of politics and to stop
climate change and to get us to
single payer and other issues.
Marianne is running as an independent but believe me she is as progressive as liberal and as much a Democrat as anyone here.
So if you make it to Drinking Liberally tomorrow you can decide for yourself.
These are my past diaries on her campaign for the 33rd;
Marianne Williamson, a better independent Democrat runs for Congress in Los Angeles
CA-33; Marianne Williamson will speak, meet and greet at the next Westside Drinking Liberally
And here she is speaking at Occupy Los Angeles over 2 years ago, none of her rivals for the 33rd did so;
