"Wait, what? Really? ... Set phasers to 'ignore.'"
Raising the minimum wage is always a popular issue, with some polls finding that even a majority of Republicans want to see it increased. A new poll doesn't find majority Republican support for raising the minimum wage, but it does find something else surprising: Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour is more popular than ... capitalism.
A new HuffPost/YouGov poll found that 62 percent of Americans support raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour, while 26 percent are opposed. Meanwhile, 53 percent have a positive opinion of capitalism, while 19 percent have a negative view.
To be scrupulously fair, a high proportion of people—28 percent—are unsure how they feel about capitalism, while just 12 percent are unsure how they feel about raising the minimum wage. But taken alongside the recent CNN/ORC International poll finding that Americans
want the government to reduce income inequality, it's safe to say that voters are ready for a set of economic policies at least as far left as anything being seriously pushed by any congressional Democrats. Yet Republicans continue to stand in the way of even the most overwhelmingly popular, simple moves like raising the minimum wage.
