Washington DC: In a surprise move, the Congress of the United States recently voted to extend the right to vote to women across the country. Despite the best efforts of some Senators to filibuster the amendment, it passed with a healthy majority.
Susan B Anthony couldn't be reached for comment, on account of her having died fourteen years earlier, but others were not so reticent. "It's a disgrace", wrote Rush Limbaugh in the august journal, The Daily Fox, "Women can not and should not be forced to endure voting lines stretching for eight hours", he opined. He added that "It is a dark, dark day for America. Today, emancipation, next they will want to be paid the same as men". Others, all men, were keen to point out that in granting the right to vote we were subjecting women to having to consider "things they shouldn't worry their pretty heads about".
Others were keen to endorse that view, many quoting the CBO Report that stated that the economic impact of this Amendment would be zero.
"It's shocking that Congress should spend all this time on an Amendment that will bring no benefits. Thanks Obama", was the prophetic statement of Ye Olde Tea Party.
In other news Oklahoma Governor, Granny Fallin, announced that this pernicious legislation could not be allowed to stand "After all, it's not like it is part of the Constitution", she said. "Oklahomans are a proud people, and we will not be dictated to". Asked how Oklahoma planned to deal with the potential allegations of illegal discrimination, Governor Fallin said that the Oklahoma Legislature will pass a law preventing anyone at all from voting. "Think of the money we will save", she trilled.
