Yes We Ban!
The latest social media satirical response to the Turkish government's efforts to ban Twitter making the rounds today in Turkey is this play on the famous 2008 Obama campaign slogan.
Another is a funny play on words in Turkish which goes something like 'If the bird doesn't tweet, you have a potency problem.' in English. (The word for 'potency' in Turkish can mean a male's capacity to have sex or the party which is in power in the government.)
Tweeting to Support a Twitter Ban ?!?
In the past few days it's been amusing to see a few Turkish celebrities and government officials tweeting their support for the government's attempts to ban Twitter.
Not Legally Possible, Period
In a press conference today the President of Turkey unambiguously stated that banning a social media platform such as Twitter was not legally possible under Turkish law, adding that only the banning of individual pages whose content has been ruled to be illegal was possible according to Turkish law.
Petitions requesting a court order to end the ban which were filed by the Turkish Bar Association on Friday are expected to be heard in Turkish courts tomorrow.
Banned Tweets Soar
Media are reporting that since the government began to try to ban Twitter in Turkey the number of tweets in Turkey has risen by 33%.
