One week after the Turkish Government banned Twitter, and three days before the local (but nationwide) elections in Turkey, YouTube has also just been banned.
I will be adding more information and background as I can.
Update 1: According to media reports YouTube was banned as a 'precautionary measure' without a court order, and all internet providers have been informed that they must implement the ban.
YouTube is still accessible at this time - 5:30pm local time in Turkey.
Update 2: There is a great deal of speculation that the ban is due to a recording released on YouTube today which is allegedly the Turkish Foreign Minister, the head of the Turkish intelligence service and a few other government officials discussing sending soldiers secretly to Syria so that they could attack Turkey and create a premise for Turkey to attack Syria, which could then be used for political gain in the upcoming elections.
Update 3: Some media are now reporting that the government has cited a first level threat to national security as justification for the ban.
Update 4: Some media have published a statement released by the Foreign Ministry which states that recording and releasing this top secret conversation is an act of spying and an attack on the nation's security and a crime of the highest degree.
Update 5: It is now being reported that all television and radio reporting about the recording which was released today on YouTube has been forbidden by the governmet citing national security.
