Yes, it may call many of the Christian faith to immediately recall Scriptural reference...but, unlike Prego, it's just not in there. Besides, it has nothing to do with what I am talking about.
Across the landscape of my life are many connecting points which, seen en toto, describe the complete and often extremely complex reality of my present self. There are lots of dots to connect. I feel relatively sure I am not the only one who has to juggle multiple plates called a life. It is just that we have one, a few, or many plates.
Sometimes, those plates are lives. We are responsible for them. Sometimes, they fall in ways we would never suspect. They land in different ways, on soft soil. They survive, but are forever changed. Some call it growth, while others call it maturity. We find ourselves struggling to find things to hold on to. There's not much more than this, but there is just a bit below the squiggledoodlethingey fold that may help you.
We all configure our lives in ways that we may wish, or may come from the wishes of others. Because we have a life does not mean that we own it; in fact most of all our lives are dictated to us.
As writers, we feel compelled to "follow the story", wherever the story (and the lives it entails) leads. The best writers do so without bias, prejudice, or a preconceived notion of outcome.
Around this table, journalism has ethics. I do not create stories when I'm practicing journalism. I leave that business to those whom I generally find completely despicable. Whether writing in this (or several other) blog, the stories come from the realities of my life; specifically my political life. That's just one plate.
Performance requires nine hours of my every week on the radio. Spanned across three networks, my radio time involves communication, conversation and dialogue with others. Sometimes, those others find agreement with the conversations I have, and sometimes they do not. The single purpose of this work is not to find agreement; it is to find dialogue. If that dialogue generates inquiry, or investigation then so be it. My radio presence is 100% authentic, and if I am unprepared for a show, that show just does not happen. So, if you are a participant in one of my radio shows, you can know that while we may not agree, I will come to the effort honestly, and I will be prepared to ask questions determined to discover just how willing you are to engage in honest, civil discourse. That's my job; it's what I do. It is a plate (well, at least three plates) in my life.
I listen to other broadcasts, and other broadcasters. I participate in network management, and ownership. My work is representative of my life. The worst feeling of all is to know that you are at one or another point on the spectrum of your life--but you are not present there. That's where the title comes into play in my world.
Stated another way, it could be "Live Where You Are!" And, as I am certain you would, were you brutally honest, admit the difficulty this rule of living can create in the "where you actually are" part of that whole thing. The title tells me how to discover my location--and where I actually need to be. It is a great help to me on a daily basis. I have a lot of other plates spinning. I think you do, too. How do you keep them going?
Read the title. It's the only hope we have.
