I've read a few diaries on just this sort of thing. People remove their degrees, qualifications or experience in order to get a job they're overqualified for because those they are qualified for either don't exist where they live or because even if they do, many folks who apply to these positions will never be given a fair shake for many different reasons.
You see, unlike most folks who went to college, I kept a very low profile. I did well enough in my academics to make Dean's and Honors Lists a few times and I held a few summer internships in both of my fields of study. It was a good thing too. Because it helped me to realize I'd suck as a Graphic Designer. Sure, I can lay things out and organize very well, but that isn't really seen as 'creative' in most people's eyes.
So I guess I'll just remove everything from my resume. My education, my experience, my skills, my honors, my references and recommendations. Everything. Then I'll just go for jobs that most of us disabled folks are relegated to because apparently I'll never fit in with the rest of the 'real' world no matter how much work I put in.
Now I know some of you are probably reading this diary and are probably going to put "You just don't want it badly enough", or not trying hard enough, or something to that effect in the comment section, but that's exactly the point. I've busted my ass for years to get here only to be denied at every turn because employers already have someone on the inside going for a job I know full well I'm qualified for. They know it too, but like I said, in order to actually get those jobs, even entry level ones, it's about who you know, not what you can actually do.
I'll admit I've written diaries like this before, but it's hard not to when one is constantly beating their head against the wall and still not getting anywhere. I'm just sick and tired of people telling me I don't want it bad enough when they don't understand my circumstances. I'm also tired of people telling me to dumb myself down because they tell me I'll never find employment otherwise.
I want to live in a smart country where all people actually have a chance at decent employment, not a stupid country where only the privileged have a chance at a living wage. But apparently the so-called majority think that's greedy. Oh Well.
See you around,
Homer
