I have trouble believing a report as sweeping as this so please help me check it out MASS FISH DEATHS: MILLIONS HAVE BEEN FOUND DEAD ALL OVER THE WORLD IN THE PAST MONTH.
So why is this happening? Why are fish dying in unprecedented numbers all over the world? When more than six tons of fish died in Marina Del Ray over the weekend, it made headlines all over the United States. But the truth is that what just happened off the southern California coast is just the tip of the iceberg. In 2014, mass fish die-offs have pretty much become a daily event globally.
Individually, each event could perhaps be dismissed as an anomaly, but as you will see below when they are all put together into one list it truly is rather stunning. So is there a reason why so many fish are dying? Is there something that connects these mass fish death events? Has something about our environment changed? The following are just a few examples of the mass fish death reports that have been coming in day after day from all over the globe…
Read on below as I grapple with this.
Oxygen depletion seems to be one cause: A lack oxygen in the water brought on by the recent Southern California heat wave is one of the reasons experts are suggesting for a huge fish die-off in the waters of Marina Del Rey.
Back in 1965 I came back from my postdoc in Israel to take a job on the Biophysics faculty at SUNY at Buffalo, NY. The department had a picnic on the shores of Lake Erie and we were witnesses to a huge fish die off: Lake Erie: "We have met the enemy and he is us"
In the 1960s, Lake Erie was declared "dead," though, ironically, it was full of life -- just not the right kind. Eutrophication had claimed Lake Erie and excessive algae became the dominant plant species, covering beaches in slimy moss and killing off native aquatic species by soaking up all of the oxygen. The demise of Lake Erie even made it into a Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax.
Many yearts later I was involved with making computer models of the Lake Erie ecosystem to try to prevent another catastrophe. We were concerned about the environment back then but things seem to have only gotten worse.
These events are not restricted to fresh water nor are they all due to oxygen depletion, for example we all know about this one: GULF OF MEXICO DOLPHINS, SEA TURTLES DYING IN RECORD NUMBERS
And yes, it it certainly not only fish: Young seals, sea lions starving in record numbers
Rescuers are scrambling to save a record number of young sea lions and seals along California's northern and central coast while scientists work to understand why the animals are beaching themselves - and in one case swimming and waddling all the way to an almond orchard near Modesto.
The emaciated and dehydrated pups are turning up along the 600 miles of coastline from Mendocino to San Luis Obispo monitored by the Marine Mammal Center. Many are too weak to move after washing ashore during their almost yearlong weaning.
Yes and bees and...and...and...
Mass Animal Deaths: April – May 2014
Yes another long list. Even if a small percentage of these reports are true it is beyond comprehension.
Our recent book Global Insanity: How Homo sapiens Lost Touch with Reality while Transforming the World speaks about what went wrong in the minds of humans and how it lead to this : we
argue that the reductionist model of the world developed by Western civilization misrepresents life, undermining our ability to regulate and adapt to the accelerating anthropogenic transformation of the world entrained by that very model. An alternative worldview is presented that better accounts for both the relational nature of living systems and the developmental phenomenology that constrains their evolution.
As time goes on I have to believe we have an explanation for how we got here. I say this not to be saying "I told you so", but to try to get you to take what we found seriously because we are in trouble and if you understand our explanation there is no way of fixing things other than a complete transformation in the way we look at ourselves and our relationship to the planet that sustains us. We are not trying to win an argument. We are sharing what, for me, is the result of a life long study.
We are upset because insane people kill children with guns. We are upset because women are killed by political know-nothings who want to control them. These are all important things but they are dwarfed by what we have done to the planet.
Language is both a blessing and a curse. In our book we grapple with this because we are trying to share ideas that are totally new using words we have to use because there are no other words. We took a lot of this from understanding George Lakoff's writings about linguistics, framing, and politics.
Even a year ago we still hoped our message would be taken seriously. It clearly is new enough that it needs a real open minded trial before the huge differences in world models can be understood. Yet it has to be this way because nothing that tries to salvage the old way of thinking can help us!
I keep saying that I am glad I was not born any later. The future looks very ugly. I only hope someone will take this situation seriously. There is no time left. We have fouled our nest and we need to change now!
