Dear Lord, please fly me to the moon in Your oxcart.

THIS BOOK CONTAINS MATURE SUBJECT MATTER THAT MIGHT BE DISTURBING TO SOME AND IS FOR MATURE READERS ONLY. READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED. By that I mean that this is a book about the truth of factual reality that far too many people just can’t handle - or won’t. Mind-abducting, man-made EXTREME religious belief stops a thinking brain, and its mind-abducted believers, however intelligent and educated, have gullibly fallen prey to specious lies and delusional beliefs that deny reality, infect politics and law, callously cause needless injury, suffering, and DEATH, and threaten the stability and life-supporting integrity of Earth like never before. Extreme religious belief in ancient prescientific myth and superstition still being so influential in determining our fate in the 21st century is a lot like NASA trying to power a vehicle into space with a steam engine – a giant leap forward compared to an ox cart of biblical times but neither quite destined for flying to the moon and beyond.
This is not a happy book, but a hopefully hopeful book. It is a realistic book written in a time in which no matter in what direction one turns there seems to be very little to be happy about – a time in which we inhabitants of Earth are rushing along a course toward unthinkable catastrophe unless major entrenched and pervasive trends are reversed by the knowledge, understanding, honesty, and reason that is available to us all but far too often resisted and denied under the influence of extreme religious authority that sanctifies ignorance and denial of reality to protect its power, influence, and wealth - a time in which it matters more than ever before that if we don’t change the direction in which we are going we will wind up where we are headed. It is a book mainly focused on the factual truth of reproductive health care for women and teenage girls, including safe legal abortion care, but about other urgent issues as well - about the flagrantly dishonest, misinformed, and willfully ignorant abdication of honesty, reason, knowledge, and common decency through the characteristics of dysfunctional thought that define Tea Party Republican rule in the nation that more than any other influences the entire world, so how could it be happy?
I hope to dismiss some of the flagrant misconceptions of abortion care that have been fostered and set in many people’s minds by the decades-long barrage of deliberately misleading false propaganda from the so-called “pro-life” movement, including representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and extreme fundamentalist Christianity in general and the contemporary Republican Party. And about urgent issues other than abortion care as well. The Texas Republican anti-abortion law, HB2, has proven to be an anti-abortion “perfect storm” that promises to totally wipe out legal abortion care in Texas, and there is no way that this will not wipe out the lives of many women and teenage girls, who will suffer and die because of it. Is this “pro-life?” Not in my book and not by any rational assessment that contains a shred of real compassion and respect for the life, the individual liberty, including freedom of religion, and the pursuit of happiness of women and teenage girls. Similar draconian Republican laws are proliferating in Republican-dominated state legislatures across the nation.
I am a psychiatrist, and obstetrician-gynecologist, and an abortion provider. This is a book of thoughts on the current Republican Party, the very real Republican War on Women, the misnamed “pro-life” movement, the Tea Party, extreme religion, un-American theocrats among us, and sanctimonious home-grown terrorist bigots and bullies who are quite reasonably referred to as the American “Christian Taliban.” It is about the health and safety of women and teenage girls vs. the appallingly cruel and willful insanity of the extremes of all religions and the unconscionable cruelty of the so-called “pro-life” movement and other related sociopolitical forces using extreme religious belief as license to discriminate against women and teenage girls and the religious beliefs of those women and girls - among some of the many other severe threats posed by pervasive disorders of thought established and reinforced by extreme religious belief that are responsible for ever-deepening catastrophe in this state, this nation, and throughout the world.
