My consultant and I have agreed that I should have single page handout with my name, the position I'm running for, a photo, and some snappy prose. At screenings and interviews, it serves as a memory prod and a place to take notes. So here's my first draft:
Laura Nicol: Engineer, Auditor, Activist, Parent, and
2014 Candidate for Texas State House District 133
[fierce photo]
My goals: Every school a good school, Every job a good job, and Every business an asset to the community!
I have a passion for righting wrongs, welcoming the excluded, and generally making the system work for everyone it touches. Wealthy elite and powerful businesses cannot buy or bully me; in fact, they are top suspects when I start looking for why the system isn’t working for ordinary people. On the other hand, I’m always open to ideas and opportunities to work together for the betterment of all… but all means ALL!
Government’s job is the protection and empowerment of ordinary people and their communities. As State Representative for Texas House District 133, I will fight for full restoration of funding for neighborhood schools, and distribution of resources according to need, not test scores. I will champion legislation to require every job to provide a living wage, decent working conditions, and regularly scheduled days off. I will fight to protect communities from endangerment and exploitative business practices by enforcing regulations, requiring independent inspections, and imposing crippling penalties for repeat infractions.
I am committed to the idea of equality for all, and support the movement to outlaw discrimination on basis of gender, gender expression, or sexual orientation. This includes marriage: I support legalization of marriage between any two adults.
