So, I found out, when filling out the Covered California application, that I qualified for Medi-Cal. It took a ridiculous amount of time for my application to be finalized (apparently, something about the way I took the photo of my driver's license tripped up the software that verified residency, amazingly enough), but I finally got through.
Living in Santa Clara County, I was able to select the Santa Clara Family Health Plan as my provider, and they are really good. My other choice was Anthem Blue Cross, who are not accepted by the clinic/doctor I go to, so that choice was even easier than it would have been otherwise.
Anyway, once my coverage started, here's what I got:
My first exposure was when I needed to refill my blood pressure medication. Co-pay: Zero
Then, Medi-Cal encourage people to schedule a physical with their doctor soon after they're signed up, so I did. I had the appointment today.
Here's what I got, a complete physical exam, including:
Blood pressure check
weight check (I lost 20 pounds since my last appointment, yay)
Blood oxygen check (not great, 94%, but not bad either)
Reflexes check
Glands check
Extensive blood panels
Referral for colonoscopy (family history), and to podiatry (foot problems) and dermatology (psoriasis)
Change in blood pressure medication
Prostate test
And, later, picked up the new blood pressure medication
Total out-of-pocked expense: ZERO
The ACA totally sucks, obviously. THANKS, OBAMA
