Tonight's guests are Helen Thorpe on The Daily Show and James Cameron on The Colbert Report.
Helen Thorpe is an author, journalist and the former wife of Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. She is on tonight to discuss her latest book Soldier Girls: The Battles of Three Women at Home and at War
In Soldier Girls, Helen Thorpe follows the lives of three women over twelve years on their paths to the military, overseas to combat, and back home…and then overseas again for two of them. These women, who are quite different in every way, become friends, and we watch their interaction and also what happens when they are separated. We see their families, their lovers, their spouses, their children. We see them work extremely hard, deal with the attentions of men on base and in war zones, and struggle to stay connected to their families back home. We see some of them drink too much, have illicit affairs, and react to the deaths of fellow soldiers. And we see what happens to one of them when the truck she is driving hits an explosive in the road, blowing it up. She survives, but her life may never be the same again.
Deeply reported, beautifully written, and powerfully moving, Soldier Girls is truly groundbreaking.
It sounds like a good book and should be a good interview.
James Cameron is a writer, director and producer best known for the movies Alien, Terminator, Titanic, Avatar and the television shows Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dark Angel. I really enjoyed Dark Angel, I guess the idea of the government having automated drones flying around spying on everybody was just too far-fetched. Tonight he is discussing his latest project Deepsea Challenge 3D.
In DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D, his passions for filmmaking and undersea exploration collide in a way that feels completely organic. And of course his passion for 3D is woven in there too.
DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D is not directed by James Cameron. Rather, he is its star or M.C., while a team made up of John Bruno, Ray Quint and Andrew Wight helm the film that follows Cameron's quest to take a submersible to the deepest point in the known ocean, 36,000 feet down. The record prior to his expedition was 27,000 feet. This documentary will throw a lot of numbers at you. $35,000 a day is the cost of the boat that carries Cameron's submersible, DEEPSEA CHALLENGER. 52 years have passed since someone has attempted to put a man down this deep. There are 100 ways this mission could kill Cameron, or as he puts it, have him "chummed into a meat cloud." But for all its facts and figures, the true focus on DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D is the intoxicating joy of exploration.
It sounds like it could be interesting.
Today on August 4th, 2014 Rolex did something very “un-Rolex” by releasing a new version of a watch not only in the middle of the year (usually all new Rolex watches are released exclusively at the Baselworld trade show in March), but they did so online.
In 2012, film director James Cameron worked with Rolex and a few other companies to design a new submersible vessel known as the Deepsea Challenger that was to dive deep in the Pacific Ocean to a depth of about 11,000 meters. James Cameron piloted the submersible himself and the mission was a success.
In a few days, James Cameron will release the Deepsea Challenge 3D movie, and in advance of the release Rolex has announced a new version of their Deepsea timepiece for the occasion. During the 2012 mission, Cameron wore a Deepsea watch on his wrist, and on the outside of the submersible was attached a not-for-sale prototype watch known as the Rolex Deepsea Challenge. This experimental dive watch was like a super-sized version of the normal Deepsea designed to withstand the massive pressure of being down to a maximum of 12,000 meters under water.
Rolex has not yet released specific pricing or availability details in regard to the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Dial watch, but my best guess is that it will retail for about $13,000.
