Moral Monday Citizen Advocacy and Moral March to the Polls Rally September 22
The Yancey-Mitchell NAACP will host a Moral Monday rally in Burnsville’s Town Square on Monday, September 22, from 5 to 7 PM. The Forward Together/Moral Monday movement has launched a Moral March to the Polls Campaign with Get-Out-The-Vote rallies, canvasses, voter education programs and Moral Monday actions across the state. The Moral Monday movement rallies against legislative policies that harm our communities and people. It does not promote partisan ideologies. Instead, grass roots advocates stand up for equality, healthcare, fully funded public education, a living wage, economic and environmental justice and voting rights for all North Carolina citizens! Speakers will include author and historian Tim Tyson and radio talk show host Ned Doyle. The Typical Mountain Boys and Pete and Kim McWhirter will provide music. This
Rev. Dr. William Barber II began protesting cuts to education as early as 2010 when Beverly Perdue was still the governor. The movement has grown since those days, identifying other policies which are having disastrous consequences in our communities. These new legislative policies have resulted in a stagnant and low minimum wage, denial of healthcare for elderly and low-wage earners, reductions in environmental safety and property rights, regressive voting laws, denial of basic human rights for Latino and GBLT families, as well as the underfunding of public schools and teachers in favor of private education companies. Life in North Carolina just isn’t what it used to be for most of its residents. You may want to bring a folding chair and perhaps an umbrella; this is a rain or shine event. Y-M NAACP asks everyone who is able to bring donations of non-
perishable food items to do so, these items will be distributed to local food banks in Yancey and Mitchell counties after the event. For more information on Moral Monday visit www.naacpnc.org.
