Jason understands the importance of good education:
I am a former community college instructor and have a master’s degree in history. I know the essential impact education has on our children, our society, our economy and our future. I strongly support increased funding for our local school districts and for continuing education for our teachers. I believe that we should encourage local businesses to share their time and resources to help cultivate innovation at our schools. Partnerships between federal, state and local – working hand in hand with the shared goal of better schools with higher graduation rates, ever increasing standards and rewards for innovation – is my goal as your representative.
Stop Common Core Spokane surveyed all state and Federal candidates for their position. This is another example of how incumbent Rep Dave Reichert (R) has become an absentee representative: he did not respond. Jason did. His
reply:
1. Please state your position on Race to the Top reforms, including the Common Core Standards, student data collection, and high-stakes testing.
I have many concerns with the direction education has taken in our state and our country. I believe that the Race to the Top and the Common Core Standards were hastily implemented without data stating that these plans will be better for our students. I have concerns about privacy issues in regard to collecting data on our students, and I wholeheartedly disagree with linking teacher evaluations with test scores.
2. If elected, would you sponsor or support legislation to withdraw Washington state from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and repeal the Common Core State Standards?
Yes, I believe the SBAC and CCSS need to be examined and tested much more thoroughly than they have been. They definitely should not be implemented without being tried and tested. Our children are being used as test subjects for unverified and unproven sweeping educational reform.
