A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Have a Favorite Month ?
I sure do, and it starts tomorrow. October is my favorite month. This is mostly a function of the weather where I live. October means the end of another long, hot summer. It's liberating. You feel like you can live again. You can go outside at midday without taking your life in your hands. People who have convertibles drive around with their tops down. You can do work around the yard all day if you want to, not just between 5 and 8 a.m. You can go hiking again. In other parts of the country hiking is a Summertime activity. Here only fools and tourists try to hike in the Summer. We've got dozens of beautiful trails just outside the city limits to the west, north and east of town and there are dozens more if you want to drive for a half an hour.
I'm not the only one who feels this way. There are annual festivals all over Baja Arizona during the month of October. Tombstone has Helldorado Days. I've never been to this one, I assume it has to do with period costumes and gunfights. Bisbee, the funkiest town in Arizona, has their big annual event, The Bisbee 1000. Bisbee is built in a canyon and many of the old houses aren't on a street and don't have driveways. The only way to get to them is up a flight of stairs. The Bisbee 1000 is a footrace that involves running around town up and down stairs. The little artist's colony of Tubac has Anza Days and Willcox has Rex Allen Days. Patagonia has a Fall Festival as well. One of the best ones is Tucson Meet Yourself, often referred to as Tucson Eat Yourself by the locals. Tucson Meet Yourself just had their 40th annual last year. Founded by prominent local folklorist Dr. James S. (Big Jim) Griffith, the festival brings together representatives of every ethnic and national community in Tucson to show off their music, their dancing, their traditions and, mostly, their food.
Here's Big Jim reflecting on Tucson Meet Yourself back in 2010:
So there you have it, I Love October. We plan to be in the Great Outdoors every weekend from now until Thanksgiving if we can. How 'bout you, what's new with y'all this fine morning ?

by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
tmservo433 organized a registering-to-vote event for Ford County, Kansas in Dodge City to reach out to Latino voters there. He partnered with League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Ford County Democratic Party. 150 people attended to listen to John Thomas (KS House District 119 Candidate), Jean Schodorf (Secretary of State Candidate), Jim Sherow (US House, KS District 1 Candidate), Mark Low (Kansas House Candidate, District 115).
"LULAC volunteers sat at their table and handled registration after registration as people came to the event to listen to how they could change their state. We knew that not only were we helping to register new and first time voters, we were helping to bring a message into a community that has been ignored - and to help them take that message back to their friends and families."
This is a great example of reaching out to disenfranchised communities and helping them vote. Because If Democratic base voters turn out, we win. Can't be said enough. More regions need to do this.
Please visit tmservo433's diary for many MORE photos! Enjoy! You can still REC it. You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.
