Congressional Representative Gwen Moore (D Wi-04) being arrested along with 26 others at a rally at McDonalds.
Today was the day that fast food workers rallied across the country to demand a raise from the pitiful wages they receive. Nobody can live on the current minimum wage. and fast food workers are pressing ahead for a raise.
Congressional rep Gwen Moore (D-Wi-04) and 26 others were arrested during one of those protests for "disorderly conduct".
From her Twitter:
U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore was detained by police at a protest Thursday led by fast food workers pressing for an increase in the minimum wage.
The nonprofit group Wisconsin Jobs Now tweeted a photo of Moore being handcuffed by what appears to be a plainclothes policeman. Moore's personal Twitter account soon followed with a tweet, written by Moore's communications director Eric Harris, confirming her arrest.
"I take great pride in supporting Milwaukee workers as they risk arrest in pursuit of a brighter tomorrow for their families," Moore said in a statement after the arrest. "I've read their letters, I've heard their calls, and I've listened to their stories. I understand their struggle, but more importantly, I see their drive to fight for a future that is equal to their talents and worthy of their dreams."
She and the 26 others were released from police custody at 3 PM.
Speaking to reporters after her release, Moore said she was issued a $691 ticket for the offense.
"I thought it was important to elevate this issue and raise consciousness," she said.
It's sad that people are subjected to abuse, misuse, and misery because they work for employers so greedy they won't pay wages people can actually live on.
Solidarity
This isn't just a "Milwaukee thing". This is going on nation wide.
Since when did it become "disorderly conduct" to just stand around and peacefully protest? About the same time that cameras became a reason to arrest or tear gas someone with a camera or remove them from a public event? And what's up with the police going after high profile individuals, elected officials and journalists?
We have a right (I see it as an obligation) to protest and bring change. Today, it's being diminished into a crime with innocent civilians being victimized. We cannot stand around and watch that continue to happen.
