Children in the Boise area can read for hockey tickets and a chance to go skating! This is a great idea. It is always good to see businesses and sports teams partnering with the community to promote literacy.
CenturyLink, the Idaho Statesman and the Idaho Steelheads are teaming up with several local libraries to reward Treasure Valley children for reading over the winter with the CenturyLink/Idaho Statesman Hat Trick Reading program.
The program is simple. First of all, children from the ages of 5 to 13 are eligible to enroll at the following libraries – Boise Public Libraries, Ada Community Libraries, Meridian Libraries, Kuna Public Libraries, Caldwell Libraries or Nampa Public Libraries.
Over 2,000 children from across the valley took part in the program last year.
Once children have enrolled, they’ll receive a book mark that lays out three “goals” for the children that center around reading. The first goal is simply signing up for the program. The second goal is reading with a family member for 20 minutes per day for seven days. And the third goal involves writing a brief essay or drawing a picture about the Steelheads hockey team.
If the three goals are completed, the child will have earned vouchers for two tickets to a Steelheads game, a Steelheads cap, and an invitation to the CenturyLink Arena “Free Skate” on Sunday, February 8, from 1 – 4 PM.
I picked up Hat Trick Cards for my kids, from the Meridian Library on Tuesday!
