Many years ago when I was legally blind, I was babysitting a friend’s young daughter and to keep us both entertained, we decided to make some chocolate chip cookies. I think she was about 7 or 8 years old. I had her read the instructions and help me measure the ingredients. As we were doing this she piped up with; “I bet you hate not being able to see.” I replied; “No I don’t hate it. Hate is a wasted emotion; it doesn’t change anything and just makes you angry all the time.” Wow! Words of wisdom from the old man.
This interaction has stayed with me ever since and once I realized I had actually come up with a life lesson of my own, I have tried not to hate. I may despise, be disgusted, upset or angry but I cannot hate. All of those other emotions are transitory but hate eats you up. Hate usually comes from fear, fear that is taught, fear that is propagated and manipulated by others for their own ends.
The next time you use the word hate, think about it.
