Rolling Stone has an interview up with Bryant Gumbel, former host of The Today Show, and current host of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO.
Gumbel is known to be outspoken and has been critical of wingnuts.
For example, in 2000,
A CBS camera caught a disgusted Bryant Gumbel blurting out "What a fucking idiot" just after he had finished a hostile interview with Robert Knight of the Family Research Council (FRC). The incident occurred at about 7:15 a.m. ET on Thursday, June 29, 2000 following Knight's appearance to defend the Boy Scout policy of excluding gays from being leaders.
In the current Rolling Stone interview, Gumbel also mentions that he has been a critic of racism and sexism in perceptions of the media:
I used to say when I hosted the Today program that if Barbara Walters, Ted Koppel and I all asked the same difficult question in the same tone of voice with the same look on our faces, Koppel would be characterized as brilliant and prepared, Barbara would be characterized as bitchy and I would be characterized as arrogant.
He also has criticisms about the NFL and its dealing with issues such as the investigation of Ray Rice, but his comments about the NRA are the most pointed:
There are a few things I hate more than the NRA. I mean truly. I think they're pigs. I think they don't care about human life. I think they are a curse upon the American landscape. So we got that on the record.
Way to cut to the chase, Mr. Gumbel.
