TheOregonian Is reporting that Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, a Democrat, may be about to resign. He was reelected in 2014 amid swirling scandals regarding his girlfriend, Cylvia Hayes, and her work with government agencies. It is alleged that she took compensation from groups outside the government for the purpose of influencing the agencies with which she worked. In earlier years she apparently was involved in a marraige for hire to help an illegal immigrant remain in the U.S., and was involved in an illegal pot farm. Kitzhaber reluctantly asked the Secretary of State to begin an investigation earlier this week.
If Kitzhaber does resign, the Secretary of State, Kate Brown, a Democrat, will take over until a new election is held in 2016. She is reported to be unexpectedly returning from Washington, DC .
The reports I have read previously seem to indicate unethical and maybe borderline illegal behavior on Hayes part. I am guessing there must be something more serious about to come out.
Update: The Salem Statesman-Journal has a statement from Kitzhaber that he is not resigning, and that he has done nothing illegal. Apparently this was the Oregonian doing its best to create more controversy and steer the story. It's interesting that the S-J did not run with the rumors, but waited for the facts. They appear to have a lot more integrity than the Oregonian.
