Per CNN, DNC sources report that the 2016 Democratic Convention has been awarded to Philadelphia, winning out over Brooklyn and Columbus OH. As a Brooklyn resident, I'm delighted (more over the fold).
I live about a block from the Barclays Center where the Convention was proposed to be held, and I plan to attend, but I never like the Brooklyn concept. While it's great to play to the working class meme, the reality is that Brooklyn would have suffered all the impacts of an event of this size, while received very few of the benefits. Most of the hotel rooms are still in Manhattan, and I suspect that most of the parties, receptions, and policy wonk sessions would be held there as well. The security perimeter (which in Charlotte was like trying to cross the Berlin Wall) would have disrupted traffic on three of the busiest roads in the borough, and I don't want to imagine what would have happened to the 10 subway lines which run underneath.
