The Iranian government has clearly been quite distressed by recent events in Washington.
As reported in the New Yorker Iran has stated that the continuing hostilities between President Obama and the Republicans are a threat to world peace.
In a virtually unprecedented act American educated Iranian Foreign Minister, Dr. Javad Zarif, wrote a letter explaining to the Republicans of the United States Senate that it was they who did not understand either the US constitution or international law.
It wasn't enough however for Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who made the offer to act as a middle man between the parties just one day after Iran received what he called a “worrisome letter” from Republican leaders, which suggested to him that
“the relationship between Republicans and Obama has deteriorated dangerously.”
“Tensions between these two historic enemies have been high in recent years, but we believe they are now at a boiling point,” Khamenei said. “As a result, Iran feels it must offer itself as a peacemaker.”
Since, as Khamenei stated
“it has become clear that both sides currently talk more to Iran than to each other.”
Iran is the logical and best party to attempt to bring the disparate parties together.
Sadly the outlook for the talks isn't bright. Republicans have already stated that they would only agree to talks if there were no preconditions, such as recognizing President Obama’s existence.
