In the Broadway hit musical, "The Book of Mormon" there is a song called, "I Believe" in which the performer mentions some of the crazy things that Mormon's believe (at least, according to the writers). Among them is the belief that they will get their own planet, and that God changed His mind about black people in 1978. Republicans also believe in crazy stuff. The problem is that they make laws (or, at least, try to) based on their insanity.
Mostly, they talk about innocuous concepts. They believe in freedom, the Constitution, limited government, personal responsibility, America. That's harmless enough, but the damage is done by virtue of the implication that those of us on the left supposedly don't believe as well. Please head through the looking glass (played valiantly by our ever popular cheese doodle) for some truly scary beliefs they hold.
They believe they are right.
They believe they are the majority.
They believe that elections only have consequences when they win.
They believe it is possible to hold the following thoughts in your head at the same time:
a) We do not torture.
b) We never tortured.
c) We stopped torturing.
d) Torture works.
e) We reserve the right to resume torturing.
They believe in things that are provably false.
They believe that proving them false is evidence that reality has a liberal bias (see raising the minimum wage, taxes. See also Iraq, WMD).
They believe that saying they have a plan equals actually having one.
They believe that answering the question of what they would do in a given situation by saying, "Not what he's doing," sounds reasonable and adult.
They believe that most people making minimum wage are teenagers at their first job.
They believe that most people receiving food stamps and/or welfare are lazy black people.
They believe that if only we could allow millionaires to save more on their taxes, that would inspire the lazy black folks to get off their asses and start businesses and get rich.
They believe a man who refuses to pay a million dollars in grazing fees to the government for using our land is a patriot worthy of defending at gunpoint, and they believe that selling loose cigarettes and not collecting the tax is a capital offense.
They believe that the original tea partiers had a greater problem with the taxes imposed on them than they did their lack of representation.
They believe "Live and let live" is a liberal attack on Christianity.
They believe they no more about Jesus than the Pope.
They believe the Pope is liberal because he says we obsess over abortion and homosexuality, when we should be more concerned about the plight of the poor.
They believe the Pope is NOT a liberal (though they won't call him conservative) because he doesn't condone abortion or homosexuality.
They believe Freedom of religion, enshrined in the Constitution, only applies to Christianity (with a brief h/t to Judaism for Jesus).
They believe there is no irony in the previous statement.
They believe that having the "right" to do something stupid is sufficient justification for doing so (See Bibi, invite. See also Iran, letter to).
They believe that we can bomb our way to victory in the middle east.
They believe that the biggest problem with the crazy and stupid stuff that they believe in is NOT that it IS crazy and stupid, NOR is the problem that most Americans agree that it IS crazy and stupid. The biggest problem is that the media occasionally mentions those beliefs.
