This is an open letter to Jack Kelly, columnist for the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette in response to his column Intolerance on the Left: Gay rights is not the same a civil rights.
Jack,
There's good news and bad news.
The good news is: I read your column today. Now before you jump to conclusions, I am not a conservative. I am, what is known in your circles as, a LibTard.
I used to listen to William F. Buckley. I figured he was a conservative because he knew more than me, not less. I looked at it as a way to learn something.
I don't learn anything from your columns. Buckley had facts to back up his positions. I wish you did.
For instance, today's column.
But I’m against gay marriage, because God said marriage is between a man and a woman, and I take Him at His word.
Having been a theology student and having just run a search through an online searchable Bible, nowhere does it say that marriage is between a man and a woman. Nowhere.
The Bible can be used to prove a lot of silly stuff like women being property, but if you are going to use the Bible to support your bigotry, at least, use things that actually appear in the text. There is a lot of bigotry in the Bible, but all of it is semitic bigotry. Verse after verse after verse about not marrying non-jewish people (but not much about men being with men or women being with women).
The Bible makes clear what God thinks of homosexuality. That’s no reason for heterosexuals to feel superior, because God thinks no better of adultery and fornication.
Yes, the Bible says God doesn't like adultery or fornication. But, speaking of marriage, I noticed that you didn't mention divorce. Get's mentioned a lot and not in a good way.
Using the Bible, it would be a whole lot easier to prove that only women could commit adultery or that you would go to hell for eating shell fish than to prove that God hates homosexuality.
In the Bible only Paul mentions homosexuality in 1 Timothy and only in the New International Verision. It is mentioned in the Bible only once. Once. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is about rape, not homosexuality (and just so you know, only men could be raped by men. Men raping women was okay).
If homosexuality was such an important matter to God, don't you think he would have mentioned it more than once?
You hate homosexuality. You use "Christianity" as a crutch to hide your bigotry. You are simply a bigot. Luckily, we live in America where you're free to be a bigot.
The only Americans whose civil rights are endangered are the devout who are punished for refusing to participate in a ritual they consider an affront to their faith.
The 'devout', as you call them, were the loudest voices and the strongest resistance against the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and forced desegregation of schools in America.
But I won’t be intimidated by the dime store Nazis of the secular left.
If you want to make a comparison to the Nazis, how the Israelis are treating the Palestinians is a lot closer and even that pales by comparison. Read up on the Nazis!! To compare the left to Nazis is you showing your ignorance.
Get your facts straight. Be a Buckley, not just another right wing loud mouth!!
We already have too many of those, and, so far, not a Buckley in the bunch.
I will continue to read your column. The bad news is: After I read your column, I will spend some time writing to you, this newpaper, and The Daily Kos, calling you on every 'fact' you pull out of your ass and want the public to swallow as the truth.
I'm watching you.
Thom
