California law makers are trying to raise the smoking age. I say if you are going to do that, then you should consider doing something with the age at which people are required to sign up for selective service. How can a country tell portion of its people that they cannot make decisions about smoking and drinking, but they can go fight and die for their country?
When the drinking age was in question, they should not have lowered it, but raised the age requirement for the draft. Then there would be no argument as to being old enough to fight in a war, but not old enough to consume alcohol legally. The same should be done with cigarettes and other tobacco products.
Don't change the age. If you're old enough to be considered an adult, then you should be old enough to make the decision as to whether or not you're going to smoke or drink. Don't you think? I mean sending our young people into battle is more serious to me than seeing one smoking a cigarette or something like it.
You can kill people and someone may kill you, but you can't smoke because it is bad for you? Where is the logic?
Really, I'd rather see my sons smoke than go off to war.
