Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Green:
My Students: During a typical day in our classroom, you will see teamwork in action, students making choices that determine the outcome of their research, and cool solutions to real world problems either past, present, or future.
Our students are gifted and talented 1st graders that come from very diverse backgrounds and 5 different elementary campuses. Many don't have the money for food and clean clothes, and school supplies are scarce. When they are all together, they can be immersed in project-based learning. The children use a lot of recycled items to creatively complete their projects and presentations, but they need good leveled reading resources to start with, to analyze and answer the driving questions in their Saving the Endangered Animals in Your Backyard project.
My Project: Our class will research the animals, in danger, that live in our area. Most people would say the answer to research is the Internet. Educators know that research is an in-depth process and skills that are taught right, can make a student a lifelong learner. The internet can be a tool, but the skills of research must be taught and grounded in fact. Good books give a tangible, focused, and constant source of knowledge that can be shared and dissected by 1st graders. It gives them the freedom and safety to learn within limits. These books will be resources for learning to read and comprehending within subject areas, sources of discovery by research groups, knowledge and facts for note-taking, and models for design and creativity as they come up with answers and solutions.
Your help will enable students to have tools of text to learn research and real world skills, enabling them to find the answers to their questions. These students have a love of learning. Help me foster that love.
